Teaching Artist: Colette Odya Smith

Soft pastels, a medium made famous by Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt and others, is experiencing a renaissance that you can join in understanding and experiencing. Working from your photographs, learn ways to apply pastels to achieve a landscape rich with color and texture. Over the last 25 years Colette Odya Smith has developed methods of layering soft pastels over a watercolor underpainting. She will demonstrate her techniques and share ways to explore this versatile medium. Some drawing or painting experience preferable. Ms. Smith has exhibited nationally and in France, Germany, and China, and has won many awards. Her work has appeared in the Pastel Journal, American Artist, the Artist’s Magazine, and Pratique des Arts. She is a Master Pastelist of the Pastel Society of America, for whom she has served as a juror and a portfolio reviewer. She teaches at the Peninsula School of Art in Door County, and for various art groups such as in Albuquerque and Minneapolis, and has been invited to teach in France later this year. She is represented by Woodwalk Gallery in Door County and Gallery Marzen in Madison, WI.
