Observational Animal Drawing Workshop with artist Beth Stoddard
A morning of drawing animals: from images, from models, and from life!

About the Course:
Learn broadly applicable and transferable observational drawing skills through the means of animal drawing with live animals from the Humane Society! Using sample drawings, photos, and models, students will learn basic animal anatomy. This will be followed by time with a live animal model to implement a practical sequence for observing, recognizing, and representing on paper species-specific proportional shapes and distinguishing traits. The work of artists past and present enriches students' own explorations. Domestic dogs will be the point of departure for studying various species. The focus is on creating numerous sketches from life, training the eye to see and the hand to draw. Students will come away from this enjoyable and unusual workshop having gained not only animal knowledge, but also a toolkit of basic drawing skills.
About the artist:
Beth Stoddard is a Milwaukee artist who draws and paints from life with a modern sensibility. She’s currently working on a project to paint all 169 of the Milwaukee County Parks. Born in Waukesha, WI, she studied in Philadelphia, obtaining degrees from both the University of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Her painterly realist pieces are continuously exhibited in southeastern Wisconsin, including representation at David Barnett Gallery, and are held in private collections nationwide. In addition to exhibiting work she has experience as a judge, juror, and teacher.
